I am looking to borrow two things:

1. a female torso mannequin (ideally larger than a size 8!) to wear a poncho in HSPH's employee craft exhibition. The display is right by the security desk so theft will not be an issue.

2. a knitting machine. Ben wants a Dr. Who scarf to replace the one his grandmother made for him, but there is no way I want to knit several hundred rows of garter stitch (can we say borrrring?) by hand.

There was massive traffic suck this morning and I was 45 minutes late to work. Because of a couple of accidents, all inbound routes north of Boston were hosed. My usual 12-minute drive to the commuter rail took 40 minutes; my regular train was late and just pulling out of the station as I drove up! Dammit! I also had to resort to DunkinDonuts for breakfast rather than the HSPH cafeteria yummy oatmeal; one donut is really all I can take because they are so high in fat. And now it's *gone* and I want lunch.

This is one of those mornings when I really wished that commuting out of Ballardvale Station was a viable option. It's not because there is no parking available after 7 or so, and because the train schedule really does not work.

Apparently my default user icon is giving people food cravings...

I have a really cheapo knitting machine. To make a Dr. Who scarf, you'd have to knit it "double wide" and sew/crochet up the two sides together so you end up with a "tube". then finish both ends, add fringe if you want and the scarf is done. That's how I've been making the Harry Potter ones.

If you want to borrow mine, you can. I'll show you how to use it.

You need to learn the back roads. For example, from your house, don't go to 133, but head down the parallel road & take a right on Osborne; bear left at the fork. Glance over at 93S when you can; if it's dead, head under it at the end of Osborne, and take a right on Clarke Rd (after the light for Lovejoy). Go down through Ballardvale, over the tracks, and take a right; that'll bring you to 125. If you know 93's still dead, you can go left-right to get to 62.

You'd be amazed what that can do for you.

Not really. I've tried it, and the only thing that sometimes makes a difference is going to Osborne. We are much closer to I-93 than you are; I travel less than one block on 133, only have to make a right turn onto 133 (and near the Raytheon plant so people are nice about letting folks turn in...), avoid the Haggetts Pond light etc.

Also there is signficant traffic through Ballardvale now because of the Wyeth plant. And I have something against cluttering up other peoples' neighborhoods with commuting traffic, probably because so many commuters whip by our house at 40 mph (yes! on that narrow curvy road) every morning.

it *might* have made a difference this morning, though.

I wandered through Davis Square earlier today (first time I've done this on foot in a very long time) and the Goodwill place had a mannequin in the window that I believe was a sale item. It looked at least reasonably sized, and they price stuff cheap as free for the most part. Might be worth a call.
