So... I got my dress from Coldwater Creek. It's deep teal velvet (darker than in the picture), and lovely. Once again, I observe that Coldwater Creek colors work best on grey-haired ladies, but with red hair, I can manage this one. I think it will be fine for a black tie event, especially since I know this isn't a super-super formal thing. I still need shoes to wear with it, though. Black velvet flats would be lovely, but apparently the shoe industry thinks it is summer already. grrrr.

And I got my hair trimmed today, which is the first step towards re-doing the henna. I got about 2 inches chopped off, and it looks really nice and poofy. The henna will probably happen Friday night. I need the red hair to make the dress work...

Still no idea what to do about make-up. I really, really dislike it. Of course I could do the semi-frum Jewess thing and wear a black velvet hat and screw the facepaint... but...

While I was at it, I bought a few other clothes. Tan pants and a nice embroidered button-down shirt for work when the weather is warmer, and a few things from Eddie Bauer Outlet -- lavender boot-cut corduroy pants (same as the olive ones I have been wearing all winter), a wonderful soft angora/cotton striped sweater in various green and purple tones, and a very inexpensive, heavy velvet-corduroy lavender shirt that can be worn as a jacket. Green and lavender are my very favorite colors, so I am happy.

These are small things, but good ones.

Payless generally has nice black pumps hidden among all the teen shoes...

If you can make it into Harvard Square, there's a little Deadhead shop in the Garage that sells black velvet china flats. It's the store next to Pandemonium; I forget it's name.

You can skip the make-up if it's stressing you out, I think; I've blown off dealing with makeup when attending some super-duper fancy events and lived to tell about it. :)

they have black velvet ones, although they may have done a special rush for me because I'm such a regular.

failing that, the designs are funky enough that you could probably wear one of the patterned pairs. And yes, they live up to their name, which might make a nice icebreaker.

They're in watertown, when they're not in a kiosk at quincy market. so don't be too alarmed by postal delay.

Those are cool shoes!

I ended up ordering some black velvet flats from Zappos.com, but I will keep this place in mind if I ever need any fancy flats.

Speaking as a member of a women's chorus, most of whom never wear make-up and hate it as much as you do (but must wear something on stage): Blush and lipstick or gloss is all you really need.
