So... I got my dress from Coldwater Creek. It's deep teal velvet (darker than in the picture), and lovely. Once again, I observe that Coldwater Creek colors work best on grey-haired ladies, but with red hair, I can manage this one. I think it will be fine for a black tie event, especially since I know this isn't a super-super formal thing. I still need shoes to wear with it, though. Black velvet flats would be lovely, but apparently the shoe industry thinks it is summer already. grrrr.

And I got my hair trimmed today, which is the first step towards re-doing the henna. I got about 2 inches chopped off, and it looks really nice and poofy. The henna will probably happen Friday night. I need the red hair to make the dress work...

Still no idea what to do about make-up. I really, really dislike it. Of course I could do the semi-frum Jewess thing and wear a black velvet hat and screw the facepaint... but...

While I was at it, I bought a few other clothes. Tan pants and a nice embroidered button-down shirt for work when the weather is warmer, and a few things from Eddie Bauer Outlet -- lavender boot-cut corduroy pants (same as the olive ones I have been wearing all winter), a wonderful soft angora/cotton striped sweater in various green and purple tones, and a very inexpensive, heavy velvet-corduroy lavender shirt that can be worn as a jacket. Green and lavender are my very favorite colors, so I am happy.

These are small things, but good ones.
