I *really* enjoy doing dishes by hand. There is something very satisfying about turning a sinkful of dirty dishes into a dish drainer full of clean ones. We don't have a dishwasher right now, and I'd almost consider just leaving it out of the new kitchen. But, there are times (e.g. when there are a LOT of dishes) that it's a good thing to have.

People often look at me funny when I say I don't mind doing dishes. I have never had a dishwasher other than G of course, and he's not very reliable sometimes :) (okay, we had one at Fandom House, but I can't recall myself ever having anything to do with it,) Never had one growing up. I still have no clue the "proper" way to load one and when trying to help friends out have been told I'm doing it wrong. So doing dishes by hand is just something I do without even thinking about it.

When I was a kid, it was my dad's job to do the dishes :)

As for after that, house #1 (Portland, OR) had a DW that we never used. Apartment #1 (Columbia, MO) had a dishwasher and I used it. Apartment #2 (Irvine, CA) and apartment #3 (in Waltham) did not, and I didn't miss it. Ben's house had a very old, very noisy dishwasher, and we used it. I could definitely live without one, though.

Of course, I once put artichokes down the garbage disposal in my parents' house. And then turned on the dishwasher, which caused a huge flood, resulting in the insurance paying for new carpets and vinyl flooring in most of the downstairs. I found out about the flood when my mom threw open my bedroom door in a fury, discovering me and my then-boyfriend going at it like crazed rabbits. Needless to say, this was *not* a happy occasion.

Then again, one less night a week doing dishes is one more night a week you could be out doing something else.

well, hm. actually, no. I've been washing the dishes once a day, just before I go to sleep at night. It takes about 5 to 10 minutes... not enough to help me gain time to spend elsewhere...

We should have lunch again sometime.
