So... with the impending job, I got back in touch with David the carpenter from Vermont (who was at our wedding, and has done fabulous work on Ben's house), because if I have a job, we can use ben's money to do the long-awaited renovations to the kitchen and bathrooms.

I got an email back from his wife (they share an email account). On Tuesday, David sliced the very tips off 4 of the fingers on his right hand while using his table saw! argh! The bones and joints are undamaged, and he has sensation in his fingers, so it's not *really* bad news. He's on painkillers and not able to do any work for at least 3 weeks... We are hoping that he'll view working for us (as opposed to some general contractor) as a way to ease back into things.

Ouchies! I did approximately the same thing about 4 years ago. I was reaching over the saw for some unknowable reason, took a nice even kerf out of the ring finger, and rather chewed up the middle finger. The fingernail hasn't completely grown back on that one, and it's got a lump of scar tissue at the tip, but it could have been far worse. A cosmic dope slap, as it were.

The funniest thing was that the ER nurse (a former Army medic) bandaged the fingers up like twin corn dogs, but the surgeon the next day just put on a couple band-aids.

Anyway, I hope David makes a full and speedy recovery.

Still, OUCH!

One of my sisters slammed her finger in the hinge of a door once, and the finger tip was hanging on by little more than a thread of skin. That was nasty, and we ended up going to three emergency rooms before it was stitched together.

And then there was the time I took a couple swipes at my left hand with a hack saw. I was sawing wood, my mind wandered and before I realized it I'd taken a couple slices at my hand.

Still have some scars, but they're faint.

Yowchies! Good luck to him...and I agree, working for y'all would be far better to start with than some big contractor.
