I'm coming back to Boston tomorrow after a week in San Diego. Before anyone asks -- the weather was fine, until the last couple of days when it got much colder and rained a lot.

Am minorly bummed out about missing much social stuff in Boston -- but realized that I will miss all the Xmas and anti-Xmas stuff until my dad has passed away, so I'd rather miss it, thankyouverymuch.

Dad is fine. He's fussy as usual, but genial about it. He has been writing a lot -- mostly autobiographical essays with subjects like "Computational Bill" about his experiences with math and computers (starting in 1931!) We found a book at the family house with exercises for stuff like this.

I need some advice though. My dad has a cat named Trouble. He is 15 and having serious digestive problems; he gets constipated and has to go to the vet for a clean-out every 3 or 4 days. My dad's wife is not very happy about this. She doesn't want to get another cat after Trouble dies, but she knows nothing about the joys of young, healthy cats. My dad is torn; he's had a series of cats over the years, starting in 1956 when he married my mom (who came to the marriage cat-enabled), and has a hard time imagining life without one. But Helen is not budging; she thinks cats are too much trouble. I fear that my dad is hanging on to Trouble because he knows that once he has Trouble put to sleep, he probably won't get another cat.

Other than that... a special treat was driving east from LA to Palm Springs when the air was crystal clear, and introducing Ben to the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway. And driving back to San Diego afterwards on some truly scary 2-lane state roads.

and etc. perhaps I will write more later...

Thanks again for pointing out that side-trip when I was out there... you're right, that's a very nice drive! Did you also detour to take a closer look at the Wind Farm, or over to Joshua Tree Park?
