so I went to BIDMC, to the Emergency Medicine department today. They need a part-time consultant, at least at first; depending on grant funding it could turn into a regular job. I got along well with the guy who interviewed me, and it's pretty likely I could pick it up if I want it.

But I haven't done much consulting, especially formal stuff. Does anyone have advice, URLs, etc.?

The key question is "W2" or "1099"?

In the first case, it's just like being a "normal" employee in that they take care of all the taxes for you. In the latter case, you have to take care of all your taxes yourself, both income taxes and social security.

If it looks to be a long-term 1099 position, expect to spend some additional money on a tax consultant to make sure you make your payments on time.

Thanks! BIDMC is large enough (employees in the thousands, I think) that their HR department probably has set routines for dealing with consultants. Hopefully this means W-2!
