kissing kids

quietannHi... a discussion in a friend's journal about her 7 year old boy having a girl he "hugs and kisses" has me a bit nostalgic...
I had a good friend -- a boy -- when I was about that age. I think we might have kissed once or twice, but mostly we just hung out together. He very patiently taught me how to jump rope (he had older sisters). And we'd sneak off to the upper reaches of various play equipment and hold hands and talk.
After he moved away (dad was in the Navy), my mom told me that if I was looking for someone to marry, I should marry someone like Greg, because he was respectful, liked me, and was nice to girls in general. And because he had dark eyes (my mom had a thing for dark-eyed men, but she married my dad with his baby blues...)
Was it sexual? Maybe in some prototypic way, but I think mostly I was just copying adults and teens: the people you really like, you hug and kiss. We still managed to freak out some of the adults in our lives, mostly other kids' parents.
(and a few years later, there *was* a "couple" -- aged 9 -- who were found having sexual intercourse. That caused quite a row, and the girl was transferred to another school. About 8 years later, I ran into them at a beach party, and they were dating each other again, after being forcibly kept apart by their parents for 6 or 7 years...)
