Sep. 24th, 2007 11:35 pm7 a.m. woke up after 4 1/2 hours of sleep (was very anxious last night and it was eased only when my husband came home and talked to me for about an hour, at 2 in the morning...)
8:40 a.m. tacked up Bearito, who only tried to bite me once. Discovered that he can use his teeth to undo the standard safety knot used for tying a lead rope to something. And will. Also he is very piggy about his grain bucket and was banging it against me whenever I went in front of him to go around to the other side. I put it in a corner of the stall, out of his reach, and that's when he undid his leadrope. oops.
9:00 a.m. flatwork part of lesson. Susan, my former instructor at Windrush, finally had time to join us, riding Guinness. It was quite wonderful to see how gorgeous Guinness can be when he is ridden by someone who knows what they are doing. My wish: to be that good! Bearito was good until the final canter, which I elected to do without stirrups. And *that* was when he chose to go very very fast and be steerable but not easily stoppable. Scary, a bit.
9:30 moved outside into the gorgeous weather to jump. Did much better at keeping Bearito under control than I did last week, and when he started acting up, my orders were to HALT him (from a fast canter) and back him at least 4 steps. And oh, he hated me for that! But by the time we got to real jumps, he was tired enough to be a little pony angel. Only did one jump of any size (2'3") and unfortunately I rode it like a Trump jump (which is to say, jjjuuuuummmmmp...) rather than a Bearito jump (jump!), so I got tipped forward on landing, but *not* over the pony's head. Gave him a little massage after the lesson, but have not found his sweet spots yet.
11:00 or a little after, arrived at
goddessfarmer's house to take Minnie out on the lawn to graze. She had not been taken out since she arrived at
goddessfarmer's house, and of course had to get all snorty about it. She took offense to the tractor, which is not something she would usually even notice. But once she realized that she could put her head down and *graze* she calmed down. Groomed her while she did so. Minnie is a beautiful and well put together horse. The sadness of her not ever being able to live up to her potential because of her injury hit me pretty hard today.
(I will not be riding Trumpie for a while because of his competition this weekend.)
Did errands and had lunch with
goddessfarmer, during which time I found out that Windrush desperately needed me to sub at a therapeutic lesson this afternoon. And being a good doobie, albeit an exhausted one, I agreed to do so. Did a few of my own errands first.
I led Bacci, a tiny pony, for the lesson. His rider, Dolly, knows what to do but has severe ADD and is very, very easily distracted and requires a lot of reminders and refocusing. And Bacci can be a little shit; he hates standing still and is prone to nipping. We had a nearly catastrophic tack failure on our first trot, which freaked me out though nothing bad happened. Got that fixed and the second trot was much better.
Home by 5:15. Long day, but good, and I spent much of it outside, which is even better.
