Things that are never "done"

I have a huge number of unfinished projects in my life. I have quilts, knitting, fanfic, etc. Much of it is "this close" to being done. And yet I rarely pick something up and finish it. I rarely start new things in these areas either, which I guess is a good thing :)
Riding is different. So is rat breeding. I am never "done" with either; there is always room for improvement, always something to be learned, and when one animal dies or moves on, there are always more. Right now, I find both of these things much easier to deal with than my other hobbies.

Date: 2007-09-04 12:40 pm (UTC)I'm not so sure it is a good thing. Not starting because of unfinished projects leads to stagnation. I have a wallfull of knitting projects. Initially I just bought sweater-sized batches when a store had a sale or went out of business; later I got smarter and bought yarn for specific sweaters, keeping the yarn and the pattern in the same bag. Neither, I think in retrospect, was a great idea. As a result of buying so much, I've been pondering the same several-dozen projects for a decade (or longer!) and they bore me. (Admittedly, my life has changed a lot in the past few years, so that I don't have much time to sit and knit.)
Same result when I went through the accumulated list of book suggestions, buying several dozen new books. That was 8 years ago and I find I don't read those books, I buy different new books and read those.
Clearly, I enjoy the pleasure of buying something and using it RIGHT THEN. I must remember this when I pick up new hobbies in the future.
