First, heading down on the commuter rail, there were a bunch of firefighters on their way to the Red Sox game. They were big, boisterous guys, who reminded me of the night [livejournal.com profile] deguspice and I spent in Rochester on the first night of our honeymoon, when the New York State Firefighters Association was having its annual convention there. Firefighters can put away a LOT of beer...

Second, at the Malden Center Orange Line station, there was a mentally ill guy I have run across before. He's a big black guy with a broken foot... One of his oddnesses is going up to people who are breaking some T law or another, and quoting verbatim the statute they are violating, complete with "chapter and verse." Today, it was someone smoking a cigarette on the platform. I've seen him confront litterers and loiterers and people playing loud music, too. It makes me wonder why it is that only the socially incompetent try to enforce the rules; most everyone else just glares at the rule violator and moves away, if they do anything at all. And no, he did not inspire me to give grief to the pierced punk who was smoking at the Downtown Crossing T station this afternoon...

Third, while walking from Roxbury Crossing, I passed a couple who were hanging all over each other while walking along the street. The woman was kissing the guy, and he was groping her butt, and they were oblivious to the world. About 5 hours later, in Central Square, I saw the *exact same couple* sitting on a bench having a huge fight... equally oblivious to the world.

Fourth, on the commuter rail home, there was a large, loud group of teenagers -- having a very well-informed, passionate discussion about politics.
