Lest anyone wonder, there *are* other things going on in my life. Yesterday I went riding with [livejournal.com profile] goddessfarmer. Minnie was mostly very good; I think she was tired from J riding her the previous day. We had a little trouble at the house with the goats, but it was the barking dogs bothering Minnie, not the goats. J had me carry a crop, and one or two whacks convinced Minnie that really she'd be better off just going forward. When we returned, she didn't much mind the goats or the barking dogs, but then she was highly motivated to get home. She was a little more suspicious of a group of young women on foot who were out to explore riding trails. (They ride at the barn up the street from J's.) I was pleased to see one of them point out Minnie and say, "I like that one better." Trumpie is a better horse in so many ways, but Minnie's still a good girl.

In between we rode through some pretty woods on a snowmobile trail. The snow is melting rapidly and will leave behind mud and swamps, so we won't be able to ride there much.

It was enough of a ride for Minnie to get sweaty, not from nervousness but just from work (OK, a little nervousness. She works herself rather harder than she needs to because she's so high strung.) We turned the horses back out without their blankets, so they could get a good roll. Last I saw of them, they hadn't rolled but were munching hay contentedly.

She's shedding like crazy and a bit skinny underneath the winter coat, but keeping weight on her isn't easy because of her age and her temperament. J does the best she can IMHO, and thinks that Minnie will actually hold condition better when ridden regularly.

This was a confidence-building ride for me, which I sorely needed after the previous week's adventures.
