Ann is derived from the Hebrew "Hannah", which means "gracious" according to www.babynames.com

Muir is a short version of "of the moors", which makes sense, since I have ancestors that came from Scotland. My parents gave me the name because they admired the Scottish environmentalist John Muir. (Otherwise, following standard naming conventions, I would have been "Ann Sussman Thomas" or "Ann Roblee Thomas" or "Ann Eva Thomas".)

Thomas stands for "son of Tom" and is the 5th most common surname in Wales. In Scotland, it's usually "Thomson" or "Thompson", and there are still rural areas in the UK where either of those names will be pronounced "Thomas". It is derived from an Aramaic word for "twin."
