1. What does your first name mean?
Ann is derived from the Hebrew "Hannah", which means "gracious" according to www.babynames.com
2. What does your middle name mean?
Muir is a short version of "of the moors", which makes sense, since I have ancestors that came from Scotland. My parents gave me the name because they admired the Scottish environmentalist John Muir. (Otherwise, following standard naming conventions, I would have been "Ann Sussman Thomas" or "Ann Roblee Thomas" or "Ann Eva Thomas".)
3. What does your last name mean?
Thomas stands for "son of Tom" and is the 5th most common surname in Wales. In Scotland, it's usually "Thomson" or "Thompson", and there are still rural areas in the UK where either of those names will be pronounced "Thomas". It is derived from an Aramaic word for "twin."
4. So what does your name mean when put together?
Gracious Tom's son of the Moors (allowing reordering...)
4b. Do you have a nickname?
There is quietann, which I use on IRC and other places, which is a nickname I aspire to live up to. I'm doctorann on Yahoo and amongst rat fanciers, but it feels a bit pretentious these days.
5. What would you have been named if you were the opposite gender?
Andrew Muir Thomas
