So I have this ancient rat Ursa. She was the one that everyone wanted, but I kept her for myself. She is the sweetest rat I've had in a long time, but she's old. The current litter are her great-great-grandchildren, among which is a little tiny Ursa clone.

ETA: For any of my vet friends or rat friends, yes, Ursa has a "lump" on her face above her right eye.

And here is a photo of the babies using mama as a straw:

thank Ben for the pics. We got out Ursa and the Baby Ursa and let them run around on the countertop while Ben took a bunch of photos. Ursa mostly ignored the baby, who spent a lot of time trying to hide underneath her (baby is just 2 1/2 weeks old, so that's normal behavior.) The photo of mama was taken when we put the baby back in the cage... mama is essentially immobilized when the babies are all nursing.

Oh wow, those pictures are adorable!

I have to say, I've never been a fan of rats (the tails bug me), but then I had a nice little moment with a friend's father's Russian Blue, and I think that if I ever get a small pet, it might just be a rat.

A lot of people really don't like the tails. However, once one spends time with rats, the tails are just part of the rat, and a very important one (they use them for balance and regulating temperature.) And of course the baby tails are very cute. I know people who regularly clean their rats' tails, and that helps reduce the squick value.
