baby rats!

So... yes, there are some new arrivals, born January 4. The mama was bred just before I figured out that something was very wrong with the rats. If this ends up being my last litter because I can't place babies out for health reasons, I will be happy to keep them all.

They look gorgeous and fat already. Can't wait to watch them grow up! How are you proceeding with deciding on your breeding stuff? Or are you just going to ride it out for a few weeks and then decide?

Most of them are quite chubby. If you saw mama, you'd understand (she is a Paige granddaughter BTW.) The little BEW white girl is pretty runty, but she's hanging in there. One of the boys is quite small, too.

I have two vets giving me advice (but they are both extremely busy right now). We are mostly just waiting to see if anyone else gets sick, and also I am going to do a thorough rat-room bleaching. I can't do it until the weekend after next, though...

well, they are. But they already have whiskers and I can feel the fur starting to poke through now. They are 4 days old.

Ben teases me because I "sort" the babies -- by sex, by color, by coat type, by markings -- rather obsessively. I can usually sex them at 1 day; the boys have bigger "bumps". They go through a phase later on where for a day or two it's really hard to tell them apart.
