Just as is the case in many humans, rats who are really fat have hard-to-find veins. And Mira is a really fat rat, with a really fat tail (they take the blood from the tail). So her son Forrest pinch-hit for her, and a sample was obtained.

Curious: Neither Forrest nor Mira were on your list as ill. Why the sample from them?

They have been exposed and will have antibodies, and are more able to deal with stress.
