Went riding with [livejournal.com profile] goddessfarmer today. We took the horses up to the indoor arena at the barn she used to manage. Minnie was a very good girl today, other than balking at going into the horse trailer for the ride. (And I should have told J that I'd never actually loaded a horse into a trailer before. When I was a teen, I was too poor to do any activities that involved trailering the horses, e.g. foxhunting. I could have afforded the "cap fee" to the hunt, but not all the proper (in the British sense) clothing a hunt requires. Thus, I was never around when the horses were being trailered.)

So... the ankle brace helps; I may need a more sturdy one, though. I still need a lot of leg work. Still working on downward transitions; J helped me out with visualizing what to do, and of course it's more difficult with a horse who doesn't want to slow down. More "settling," less reins. Still need to relax and breathe more while riding. Need to talk at myself as I tack up and down, so I do things more correctly. I actually figured out that I had not ridden, other than one or two trail rides and two lessons, in 25 years, not 22 like I have been saying. So simple things like "reins over head, undo lead rope, remove halter, put on bridle" I need to say outloud.

Anyway, so Minnie was very good to ride. She was very go-ey, and eventually I figured out this was because she hadn't had a half hour or so of being ridden at the walk before we did any fun stuff. So... walking. trotting. circles. and CANTERING!!! The first time it happened it was completely by accident; I gave her a "canter" signal without realizing what I was doing. After that, I decided it was a good thing, because I wasn't scared at all, so I did it a couple more times. Minnie's a thoroughbred (racehorse breed), so she really wants to *run* until she gets tired. And today I got tired way before she did.

Most amusing moment: "Posting trot is like making love to the front of the saddle." Or so says J. And she's right, because it's more rolling forward and back than up and down, but it's not like a riding instructor can really say that to an underage girl. But I of course had to make the obligatory crack about why girls like horses. Snicker.

I am riding again on Thursday, because it's my last chance for 2 weeks. Still working on getting lessons somewhere... It's a weird time, because of the holidays.
