Actually it usually takes several tries to get a "good" photo because as soon as we set them down they start wandering off in random directions, burrowing under each other, etc. We get plenty of photos of cute little rat butts...
I noticed the alternating black and white pattern and thought it would make an interesting photo, so I waited until they lined themselves up to take that picture. It took a while for them to cooperate.
She's actually not all black; she's a "Berkshire," which is the rat equivalent of a tuxedo cat -- black with white belly and chest and feet. The marking is very common and most people don't breed for it deliberately, but it's one of my favorites. Reba M is also a black Berkshire. The father is Porthos, who looks a lot like the front boy in Boys 2.
