As happens every damn time I come to California, I have caught a cold. So far it's just a terrible sore throat and drippy nose, but... dammit! I'm celebrating my 10th anniversary of leaving Southern California, and this is just another reason.

Other than that, I was a lazy slug today until about 3 p.m., when we went to visit my Orthodox cousin, and had dinner with him, my aunt, and other cousin. I really like Robert, but he's caught in a lot of chaos related to his three sons. (One of them "just showed up" a few days ago, with two coatimundis who are now destroying Robert's spare bathroom.) We talked politics without fighting, even though I'm probably a bit to the left of him. But just a bit. And he's an oil engineer, so he had some insider information about alternative energy. (Brief version: Oil is finite; Ethanol is BS being forced on us by ADM's lobbyists; solar and wind are promising but limited; going back to nuclear energy is inevitable in his opinion.)

Might it have to do with the plane ride involved in getting to CA? I think that's why a lot of people tend to get sick on trips. I know I was rarely sick when I stayed at home or traveled by train in Europe, but when I went by plane I often ended up sick as a dog.

Btw, would you be interested in doing some Vorkosi-verse beta reading for me sometime? I find myself in the market for a new beta reader or two and thought of you.

I could read for you, sure. Just remind me to do it (I can be slow.) quietann at gmail is the best place to send stuff these days.

Where does he propose we bury the spent radioactive fuel?

*sigh* Alas, uranium is finite too. It doesn't seem so at today's rate of consumption, but if we were to replace use of oil with nuclear in a big way, we would hit "peak uranium" pretty soon too.

I think that's the big issue with nuclear, really. I mean, I think people will come to tolerate a bit of radiation poisoning, if it's the only way they can keep driving thier hummers.

There are any number of inexpensive houses with acreage available near Kiev in the Ukraine, if that's their take on it.

But I definitely agree, uranium is finite, and breeding plutonium from U238 makes waste even faster than just fissioning natural uranium.
