It's so pretty in the picture, but I don't think I'd want one in my tomatoes (of course, I'm allergic these days, so the horn worm would have been pretty safe eating mine).
I harvested one of those the other day too, after it had done similar damage. I had another in my patch, but it had been parasitized, so I left it alone.
yeah, we had one this year, but i discovered it before it ate more than a couple of branches. Whew! They work fast. Last time we grew tomatoes, a couple years ago, we had four of them, one with parasite. Hope the wasps are getting enough of them to grow on!
If they get away from you and the parasitic wasps, they pupate and turn into those glorious big Sphinx and Hawk moths that you sometimes mistake for hummingbirds.
Our mutual friend madbodger pointed me in your direction. I posted some concerns I have been having about diabetes over on my journal, and he suggested you might be a good resource. I haven't been diagnosed with diabetes, but I've been displaying more and more symptoms of it over the last several months.
I don't know if you're interested in making a new friend, but I'd love some advice if you can help me out. I do have an appointment with a nurse practitioner on Thursday, so I am doing my best to really figure out what's going on.
Thank you!
Mary
P.S. Oh my goodness that is quite a bug. Yikes! I have to run out and examine my tomatoes right now to keep them safe!
it's fine... we have probably met (do you go to Jill E's parties in Milford?)
As for diabetes, I have Type 1, which is a different animal than adult=onset or type 2 diabetes. For one thing, you wouldn't have symptoms of Type 1 for months and months before ending up at the doctor; it comes up quickly (3 weeks in my case) because the body's destroying its insulin-producing cells. But there are things in common, too.
Anyway, first thing to do is exactly what you are doing: see a medical professional, get a fasting blood glucose value and then perhaps a glucose tolerance test if the fasting BG is high. If you can, fast before your upcoming appointment so you won't have to go back to get a fasting BG drawn.
There are other conditions that can mimic some symptoms of diabetes, but luckily the glucose test is quick and easy and should say right away whether this is diabetes or something else.
BTW, that has been, so far, the only tomato hornworm I've had this summer. But man, that was disgusting!
We may or may not have met; I don't go to a lot of parties. I met madbodger through vvalkyri, who has been an in-person friend of mine for about 13 years. I did go to one of sunspiral's parties once, and it was fun, so I might attend the upcoming end-of-summer one. I have a shy/introverted streak too, so I don't always get out as much as I'd like.
I'll be having a fasting glucose test at 9:00 tomorrow morning. I'll be allowed to eat afterward. Yay! I'll bring food so I can eat right away. I don't do well with fasting.
I hope never to find a hornworm in my tomatoes. My tomatoes are in containers on my roofdeck up here on the third floor. My hope is that there won't be any stray moths up here laying eggs, as that's the only way I can imagine it would find its way here. Yikes!
