So, I was going to say, "And you wouldn't see THAT in Davis Square" at the end of my turkeys post.

But then I realized: two guys fighting over a girl, and all of them are TURKEYS. Nope, no different from Davis Square at all.

When I saw the turkeys at 6:30 a.m., I went and woke Ben up in the other room (he was on Dog Duty), so he could see them. We see them around fairly frequently, but they've never been in the courtyard before. I figured the dog had probably already woken him up, or was about to. After all, she gets *me* up at 5:30 a.m. when I am on Dog Duty.

But I was wrong, and Ben was really, really pissed off. He left me a nasty-note on the computer, which is very unusual for him. After I went back to sleep, the dog did in fact want to go out... twice. So he was annoyed at her, too. I apologized and gave him a hug. The dog, being a dog, could not apologize... Instead, she tried to squeeze between us when we were hugging, and she sniffed his butt. Repeatedly. We keep reminding each other that for a dog, a butt, canine, human, or anything else, has a great big name tag on it.

Ben did take photos of the turkeys, and we'll post them later. I am at work; he is (hopefully) asleep.

The Vineyard, at least in the '90s, had a surfeit of wild turkeys.

When we lived there, the turkeys were everywhere. Luckily not in our back yard, because we lived in what we called "The Bronx of Martha's Vineyard" (aka downtown Vineyard Haven, probably the one place on the Island where you could see into your neighbor's windows), and I didn't want one of our cats bringing home a turkey, or vice versa.

But leave the town center, and they were everywhere, usually loitering in the middle of the main roads that lead from one part of the Island to another, or competing with the deer for people's flower beds and vegetable gardens, or standing on the side of the bike paths like they were bystanders at a race, cheering on the participants.

I never found them anything other than icky. Baby Sonia's babysitter's yard sometimes got overrun with them, and given that they were about twice Sonia's size at the time, she found them terrifying.

Yes. The first wild turkeys I ever saw were while riding on the bike trail out of Edgartown. Probably around '97 or so. It was weird and the husband and I had no idea what kind of birds they were at first. By process of elimination we decided they must be wild turkeys.

I was not pissed off, just annoyed.

While the turkeys were interesting, I do not enjoy being woken up. Especially when this was the second time in less than 24 hours, Ann woke me up in the morning. So I dug up the quote from Lazarus Long in Heinlein's "Time Enough for Love".

"Waking a person unnecessarily should not be considered a capital crime. For a first offense, that is."

With Sophie waking me up in the morning for her walks and breakfast, I'm way behind on my sleep. Once I'm awake, I don't easily fall asleep again, and unlike Ann and Sophie I don't usually nap mid-day. Sophie doesn't understand that this might be a problem for me, but I was hoping that Ann would.

I guess this is not our day for domestic bliss. I'm sort of glad I'm at work...

I really did think that by 6:30 a.m., you'd be awake because of the dog.

Please nap today.

...actually we had wild turkeys on our street two weekends ago. somebody called animal control, who spent a long and fairly loud time making fun of the turkeys and shooing them along their way to hassle suburbanites instead :)

snicker. Yes, I do know that there are wild turkeys all over the place, even in Boston. (I have seen one on Boston Common...) But we get a lot more of them out in the 'burbs...

I was working on someone's computers at a house up in the hills of San Anselmo yesterday, and three turkeys did their (apparantly) usual walk-by, gobbling like maniacs. And my folks new place gets both turkey and deer wandering by on a daily basis.

I almost hit one a few days ago, down the street from the house. It "ran" out of the woods in front of the car. They seem to be more populous these last few years. They're all over town lately.

I hope Ben got more sleep afterwards for everyone's sake.

I suppose it's better to hit a turkey than to hit a deer... but I'd feel really bad if I hit one.

We have seen them around a lot recently, but never in the courtyard before. It's enclosed on 3 sides, which I don't think they like. But now I think I know what very large critter has been hanging out on our roof, just above our bed...
