May. 15th, 2002 11:05 amI think I have said that mama rat Stormy is fostering some baby wild mice whose home we destroyed on Saturday... anyway, there were 8; now there are 5. Two died who-knows-how, and last night, I ... this is awful ... stepped on one. Squished the poor little thing right into the carpet. I almost fell apart when I found it.
I might have dropped it, but it's also possible that the baby got out through the cage bars and fell to the floor. The baby mice have fur now and are quite capable of motoring around. And while they mostly stay in the nest, it's pretty clear that they are baby wild animals who want to take off as soon as possible.
So, I moved Stormy and all the babies (8 rats, 5 mice) into an aquarium last night. This way, when the mice _really_ get mobile, I won't have to worry about them escaping. My plan is to remove Stormy and her kids in a week or two, keep the mice in the tank for another week, and then set them free in the woods.
