So... I have this idea. In honor of the season (and please don't bitch about St. V's day here...), post in your LJ the lyrics of your favorite love song, and why you like it.

I like this because it's wistful and happy and sad all at once, and sometimes it makes me cry. Best listened to as originally intended, fading into "Curtains" (which follows...)

"We All Fall in Love Sometimes"
Music by Elton John
Lyrics by Bernie Taupin
(1975)

Wise men say
It looks like rain today
It crackled on the speakers
And trickled down the sleepy subway trains
For heavy eyes could hardly hold us
Aching legs that often told us
It's all worth it
We all fall in love sometimes

The full moon's bright
And starlight filled the evening
We wrote it and I played it
Something happened it's so strange this feeling
Naive notions that were childish
Simple tunes that tried to hide it
But when it comes
We all fall in love sometimes

Did we, didn't we, should we couldn't we
I'm not sure `cause sometimes we're so blind
Struggling through the day
When even your best friend says
Don't you find
We all fall in love sometimes

And only passing time
Could kill the boredom we acquired
Running with the losers for a while
But our Empty Sky was filled with laughter
Just before the flood
Painting worried faces with smiles

-----------------------
"Curtains"

I used to know this old scarecrow
He was my song, my joy and sorrow
Cast alone between the furrows
Of a field no longer sown by anyone

I held a dandelion
That said the time had come
To leave upon the wind
Not to return
When summer burned the earth again

Cultivate the freshest flower
This garden ever grew
Beneath these branches
I once wrote such childish words for you

But that's okay
There's treasure children always seek to find
And just like us
You must have had
A once upon a time

Somebody

Somebody, by Martin Gore

I want Somebody to share
Share the rest of my life
Share my innermost thoughts
Know my intimate details
Someone who’ll stand by my side
And give me support
And in return
She’ll get my support
She will listen to me
When I want to speak
About the world we live in
And life in general
Though my views may be wrong
They may even be perverted
She’ll hear me out
And won’t easily be converted
To my way of thinking
In fact she’ll often disagree
But at the end of it all
She will understand me
Aaaahhhhh....

I want Somebody who cares
For me passionately
With every thought and
With every breath
Someone who’ll help me see things
In a different light
All the things I detest
I will almost like
I don’t want to be tied
To anyone’s strings
I’m carefully trying to steer clear of
Those things
But when I’m asleep
I want Somebody
Who will put their arms around me
And kiss me tenderly
Though things like this
Make me sick
In a case like this
I’ll get away with it
Aaaahhhhh....

This song first hit me when I was wrestling with the break-up of a seven-year relationship, and it pointed out everything I was lacking. And then I immediately found Somebody.

ahhh, yes, Curtains. It was about 3+ years prior to when I was a senior in high school, and the annoying substitute English teacher told the class to "write a poem during class time". She musta thought she was giving us some sort of culture, all we wanted to do was to joke around. So I "wrote" Curtains as "my poem", figuring she wouldn't know any obscure song from the last tune on an old Elton album.

She LOVED the poem (who wouldn't?) and started to go all gaga about submitting it to some magazine, or at least recording it spoken verbally. Horrified, I realized she was not pulling my leg, she didn't know I had pilfered it. So I did the only thing a "shy, don't put me in the spotlight" teen would do.

I ripped it up in front of her while she cried in agony.

(gah that was the evillest act I ever did)

My Funny Valentine is my favorite love song of the pre-rock era. The melody is amazingly beautiful and the lyrics celebrate the beloved's imperfections.

My favorite love song of the second half of the 20th century would be If I Were A Carpenter which asks the object of the singer's desire if she loves him for who he is and not for what he does or can earn.

I have lots. But the one that usually comes up first is 'Strange Fire,'. from the Indigo Girls' first album.

Part of its meaning is circumstantial, in the way that it's shown up unexpectedly over and over in my life since the late '80s. But, however overwritten some of the lyrics, the concept of "strange fire" is sort of a litmus test on whether a r'ship will have...well, strange fire. Is it fate-y, foretold-y-, metaphysics-feeling? Do I sense that I have something to give to that person that's deeply personal yet inexplicable? Blah blah blah.

Oh, and for non-musical bang-for-buck: V'Day is also my father's Yarzheit. A new meaning for a "candle burning at both ends."

If You Ask Me
If you ask me why I love you, the answer will be wrong.
And if you wait here for my answer, you’ll wait here all night long.
Some things need a reason. Others, they just are. They just are.

But if you really need an answer, if you want a reason why,
If you gotta ask the question, this is my reply.

When I hear you laughing I know just why you’re laughing.

I know just what you’re looking at when you’re lookin’
I know what you’re hearin’ when you sing.
I know what you’re sayin’ even when your words don’t mean a thing.
Not a thing.

So baby, hold on to your question, or maybe let it go.

Some things need an answer, others we just know.

When I hear you laughing, I know just why you’re laughing.

I've always liked this, sappy as it is:

Silly Love Songs

You'd think that people would have had enough of silly love songs,
but I look around me and I see it isn't so.
Some people wanna fill the world with silly love songs,
and what's wrong with that, I'd like to know, cause here I go again?

I love you, I love you, I love you, I love you.

I, I can't explain, the feeling's plain to me, now can't you see?
Ah, she gave me more, she gave it all to me, now can't you see
what's wrong with that, I need to know, cause here I go again?

I love you, I love you, I love you, I love you.

Love doesn't come in a minute, sometimes it doesn't come at all.
I only know that when I’m in it, it isn't silly, it isn't silly, love isn't silly at all.

How can I tell you about my loved one? How can I tell you about my loved one?
How can I tell you about my loved one?
(I love you) How can I tell you about my loved one?
(I love you) How can I tell you about my loved one?

I love you, I love you.
I, I can't explain, the feeling's plain to me, say can't you see? (I love you)
Ah, he gave me more, he gave it all to me, now can't you see? (I love you)
I, I can't explain, the feeling's plain to me, say can't you see? (I love you)
Ah, he gave me more, he gave it all to me, now can't you see? (I love you)
How can I tell you about my loved one?
(I, I can't explain, the feeling's plain to me, say can't you see? I love you)
How can I tell you about my loved one?
(Ah, he gave me more, he gave it all to me, now can't you see? I love you)
How can I tell you about my loved one?
(I, I can't explain, the feeling's plain to me, say can't you see? I love you)
How can I tell you about my loved one?
(Ah, he gave me more, he gave it all to me, now can't you see? I love you)

You'd think that people would have had enough of silly love songs,
but I look around me and I see it isn't so.
Some people wanna fill the world with silly love songs, and what's wrong with that?

gah, that one was *all over* my adolescence. It's terribly silly, but I like it, too.

Cure - Love Song Lyrics

Whenever I'm alone with you
You make me feel like I am home again
Whenever I'm alone with you
You make me feel like I am whole again

Whenever I'm alone with you
You make me feel like I am young again
Whenever I'm alone with you
You make me feel like I am fun again

However far away
I will always love you
However long I stay
I will always love you
Whatever words I say
I will always love you
I will always love you

Whenever I'm alone with you
You make me feel like I am free again
Whenever I'm alone with you
You make me feel like I am clean again

However far away
I will always love you
However long I stay
I will always love you
Whatever words I say
I will always love you
I will always love you

Almost anything romantic by Lennon/McCarney will certainly do. But most people know their music, so I'll post a lesser known song.

Artist: The Bobs
Song: Drive By Love

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

She worked at the Fotomat
She wore a uniform with a lavender hat
And that's all there is to say about that
(And that's all there is to say about that)

He worked for the UPS
He knew every number of every address
He was climbin' up the ladder of success
(He was on the ladder of success)

Every day as he drove his route
He would pass her booth
And give her a toot
She'd look up and their eyes would meet
But they never got closer than across the street

It was a drive by love
(Full time four wheel love)
Drive by love, drive by love

"It drives me to distraction" she said
"I can't get that driver out of my head.
He honks his horn and my face turns red."
(He honks his horn and her face turns red)

He said "I wanted to meet her, and just my luck,
I found a used camera for only a buck.
And now I'm takin' pictures of my UPS truck."
(Now he's taking pictures of his UPS truck)

Every day as he drove his route
He would pass her booth
And give her a toot
She'd look up and their eyes would meet
But they never got closer than across the street

It was a drive by love
(Full time four wheel love)
Drive by love, drive by love

He took in his film and said "I must confess,
I'm not a photographer, they're probably a mess."
But she held up a sign that said "UPS Yes!"
(She held up a sign that said, "UPS Yes!")

It was a drive by love
(Full time four wheel love)
Drive by love, drive by love
