It's pretty fucking awful to be a feminist, actually. You get called names by Rush Limbaugh and friends, you get to be ridiculed in the mainstream media and if the wingnut sources are anything to come by you are responsible for white women disappearing in Aruba, for the falling birthrate, for every divorce that has taken place and the demise of the Western civilization. You are even responsible for increased alcohol use among young women and male depression. In fact, you are pretty goddamnawful.

At the same time, you are responsible for anything that still affects women negatively. Because you haven't fixed it yet.

Dunno for how long, though. *shudder* HuFu - I am deliberately not posting a link. TVP Soylent Green is what it is; my unrealistic darkly whimsical side wonders when they'll skip the TVP part of it.

I suspect that you already are partly responsible for what amounts to a falling birthrate. Before the 70s, virtually everyone bred, and bred more extensively than is common now. Now, lots of people aren't breeding for a variety of reasons. But the last wave of breed like rabbits that the US produced a huge amount of people, and while the birthrate hasn't fallen much if any in the US, I bet if you look at it in proportion to total population it's down.

That's just my theory, I've not looked for or at numbers.

http://www.cdc.gov/nchs/fastats/births.htm

Birthrate has fallen quite a bit... was 14.1/1000 population in 2003

http://www.cdc.gov/nchs/pressroom/03facts/pregbirths.htm

"From 1990 to 1999, there was a 9-percent decline in the birth rate (from 70.9 to 64.4 births per 1,000 women aged 15-44)"

http://www.cdc.gov/nchs/pressroom/03news/lowbirth.htm

"The U.S. birth rate fell to the lowest level since national data have been available, reports the latest Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) birth statistics released today by HHS Secretary Tommy G. Thompson. Secretary Thompson also noted that the rate of teen births fell to a new record low, continuing a decline that began in 1991.

The birth rate was 13.9 per 1,000 persons in 2002, a decline of 1 percent from the rate of 14.1 per 1,000 in 2001 and down 17 percent from the recent peak in 1990 (16.7 per 1,000)"
