Mar. 8th, 2004 02:18 pm1. why rats?
I met my first rats as an undergrad psychology major. I was impressed with how nice and smart they were. As a senior in college, I was friendly with someone who had a very cute pet rat. I didn't get any as pets for another 10 years or so, though.
I think they appeal to me because they are so underappreciated. And I breed them because I want everyone to have a chance to have some as pets...
2. for each job that you've had, what was one thing you liked about it?
hm. In any job, being able to set my own hours has been a good thing. Other than that:
SAIC (tech illustrator/writer): being respected, being offered a better job there (though I went to grad school instead), watching the fighter planes fly over while I went swimming at lunch time...
Bentley College: um... the occasional really great interaction with an undergrad, and, some of my colleagues whose eyes were open to what Bentley is.
Sandstorm: working with Ben and other friends
Tufts: coworkers, programming challenges
3. do you do activism? why, or why not?
I do, but only in the quietest way (writing letters etc.). I used to do a lot more, but found a lot of activist groups to be very rigid about their issues, and the people themselves to be "too much about ego". Of course I am involved in the pro-gay marriage efforts now...
4. do you feel like there are categorical differences between your r'ships with men and with women?
If you mean Capital-R relationships, well, I only have
gosling on the female side. Based on that very limited experience, I am more "in charge" and less focused on remaining pleasant when I am with a woman. (She used to tease me about "being a boy" in our r-ship...). I think a woman would see a truer version of me than a man, in general.
5. what's the most beautifully scenic place you've ever been?
Too many to count. Bryce National Park or Cedar Breaks National Monument are up there. The east side of the High Sierra, Mono Lake... The town of Lynton near Exmoor in England, and Exmoor itself, are lovely in a very rugged way. Multnomah Falls in Oregon....
