Hi folks, in response to kb17's post... if you really want to do this, here are a few things to keep in mind:

start-up cost... I started with a small cutting mat and a small clear ruler and a small rotary cutter, and then almost immediately found that I needed larger ones of each. Joann fabric has them; so does Ames (at a somewhat cheaper price, if they are in stock...). Two people can share a 24 X 36 cutting mat... they run about $35-45! As for rotary cutters, you need a 45mm one at the smallest. There are two brands I reccomend -- Olfa, which are everywhere, and Fiskars, which is at Joann's and Ben thinks has a better safety mechanism (one early lesson -- in my case enforced by dancingdeer -- is CLOSE YOUR CUTTER after every cut. They are sharp!!!!)

Fabric -- can be very expensive but there are ways to economize... Joann fabrics (their calicos) are about $3.50/yd, and Fabric Place (in Woburn and Framingham) has remnant piles with better-quality fabric for about the same cost. Otherwise, high quality quilting cottons run $8-10 per yard! It adds up fast!

I recently bought a nifty tool for cutting lots of strips of fabric... I don't have it right here, but I got mine at JOann... It's a large square of clear plastic with slits cut every half inch. I would be happy to share it.

BTW klingonlandlady knows much more than I do about how to economize on quilting tools/supplies
