How much do you want to be a trainer and write documentation? How much interaction with your coworkers do you want?

I want more interaction than I got as just a stats geek.

Point by point, here's how I feel about each listed job component:

  • this person will provide direct faculty and student consultation for statistical questions in person and via email -- this is one of my favorite things to do.

  • create online and printed materials for statistical support -- works well for me.

  • identify instructional and research software for public labs -- less experience here, but not a bad thing to learn.

  • develop and teach mini-courses on quantitative methods and software for the various disciplines -- I'm an ex-professor, with a teaching "attention span" of less than a semester. I've taught "mini-courses" before, with good results. This is a "yes."

  • manage the daily operation of the CGIS training facility, including coordinating usage and equipment maintenance -- Hard to say. May be more "managerial" than anything I have done before...

  • Supervise student lab assistants -- definitely have experience here and enjoy it.

Then I'd say, you've thought about it, go for it. :) I was just wondering if you were still tired of teaching.

identify instructional and research software for public labs

If you ask me about this, I might have a few ideas, our lab supports some statistics classes, and we have some apparantly moderately good software to help out those students. Can't remember what it's called at the moment, though.

It's full time. I thought you wanted part time work?

Part-time is going to be difficult, unless I go the consulting route...

Hm. I think that's in the shiny new building on Cambridge Street, too. (It hasn't opened yet.)

That's my impression, too. Poking around the website, it looks like this is a new position.

Ah, "CGIS", yes, it definitely is. Well, I know the classroom media tech who will be supervising that end of things there, and he's a good guy....

It can't hurt to apply. If they offer it to you you can always say no thank you.

That is true. I'm still torn about "what to do next" but this does meet several of my hopes for a new job -- larger teaching/training component without being a "professor", more interaction with people, consulting/helping others.

Sounds right up your alley, and you wouldn't have to move to Freeport ;-)

It sounds like a lot of organizing and dealing with people... which could be taxing, or could get you out of your shell if you approach it with the right attitude and get along with the people there. I suppose it can't hurt to apply and find out more about what it will really be like.
Besides, working in Cambridge can be pleasant and social.

Yes, you want to apply for it.

The real question is, do you want to actually take it if they offer it to you. That I can't answer. :)
