And, it turns out, he and Victoria were NOT officially engaged until very recently.



"As our homestay was billed as a "homestay matrimonial" and we're in a largely Catholic part of the world, I thought it might be best if Victoria and I pretended to be married by wearing matching rings. I presented the plan to her while we were in Lima, but told her that I'd only do it if she were willing to actually marry me. Thankfully, she thought the plan was pretty good. We're engaged."

Victoria is a really wonderful woman, and a very good match for Alan. So maybe I'll get to go to Alaska next year for a wedding!

Mazal Tov on their engagement!

My proposal was "If we got married we could live in married student housing." I know, not very romantic, but 23 years later we're still in love.

When I was in graduate school, several marriages resulted from similar concerns :) The housing office would actually let engaged couples live together, as long as they could prove they had set a wedding date sometime in the following 6 months. One of my room-mates took advantage of this, and is still happily married.

I am just so thrilled that Alan has found someone who wants to be with him. He's never dated casually, and his previous relationships have been few and far between, and ended very badly. He's 37, so he's ready :) He and Victoria have known each other for about 6 years now, and have been dating for the past 2 years or so.

My hope is that Alan and Victoria have children fairly quickly, so our father can meet his grandchildren. They have been talking about kids for about 6 months now, and definitely want them. (I don't have children, for various reasons.)

Practicality (such as housing) can sometimes prevent procrastination.

I wish Alan and Victoria much happiness, and to you as well. We don't have kids either, but we have nine nieces and nephews who are a great joy.
