with Myrtle sleeping happily in my lap, I forget that her kidneys are going, and she's quite crippled. She's purring like a kitten.

She needs her shots for the year. I am almost afraid to take her to the vet, for fear that they will try to talk me into putting her down.

There are some points in our relationships with our pets where we enjoy every single moment because we know that there are only a finite number of them left in their little lives.

Enjoy the peace and time together. Keep writing about it. And take pictures. Because when they are gone, that is all we have left; the stories and photos of the companions that have enriched our lives.

It's nice that being with you still makes her happy. Do you have to get her shots? She's old/ill and doesn't go outside. Would the shots really be doing her much good?

When Midnight got to the point that her kidneys were failing, the vet decided to not give the shots. Since Midnight never went outside and her immune system was already compromised she didn't think it was wise. It is a state law though that she has to have a rabies shot.

Have faith - Dr. D and Dr. L at Andover are both wonderful vets and good people, and I have faith they won't try to talk you into something that you and Myrtle aren't ready for. If they do, I will personally kick them.

I would talk to them, though, about whether she needs the shots. At her age, the physical exam is the most important thing, and vaccines may actually wind up doing more harm than good....

Actually, she already is off a lot of the shots. She hasn't had a feline leukemia shot since the first year I had her, and last year she didn't get the distemper one, precisely because she is so old and fragile (yet she lives another year!) She might be due for a rabies shot, though.

We have been seeing Dr. W, who I like quite a bit. In any case, it's about time for the roughly every 6 months checkup.
