someone just shoot me?
Nov. 30th, 2004 02:46 pmI have a broken toe.
Late last night, I dropped an empty ceramic casserole dish, and its edge landed with full force on my big toe. It was painful enough that I saw stars, and got a bit shocky for a while. Ben rushed around doing what he could to help (including bringing me a bag of frozen peas to put on it, bringing me a Vicodin, rounding up some rats, etc.) until about 3 a.m., and then we went to bed. It took me a while to fall asleep because my toe hurt so much.
This morning, it still hurt like hell; neither vicodin not ibuprofen touched the pain. I called my doctor, but she didn't have any appointments today, so I went to the NEMC emergency room. They took X-rays, which showed a hairline fracture at the very tip of the toe; it's now "buddy taped" to the toe next to it. More importantly, they drilled a hole in my toenail to get out the blood that had pooled underneath it. By relieving the pressure, the pain was reduced considerably. I will lose the toenail but should grow a new one with no trouble. My toe is all different shades of Bruise, and will take about 4 weeks to recover.
Argh. I so DO NOT need any more medical adventures this year!

Date: 2004-11-30 12:43 pm (UTC)I've dropped enough hardware on my toes in my life you'd think I'd wear steel toed slippers around the house by now, but I don't.

Date: 2004-11-30 12:47 pm (UTC)Sonia broke her toe last summer in gymnastics, and it was not fun. Luckily you can be quite functional once the actual pain is gone, if you're a good gymnast...[rolls eyeballs]

Date: 2004-11-30 01:15 pm (UTC)Then I SQUICKED! big time. eeeeeEEE!!!
Maybe your sweetie will be a doll and carry you up and down the stairs
like a honeymooner?
Take care! ouch! and sympathies. My big toe's nail is coming in "wrong"
so maybe we can compare toes to see who's nail grows in faster. Should we
start a poll to guess when your toe's going to look right again? I vote for Christmas Day, 2005. Big Toe nails grow slowly....perhaps we can share a bottle or 10 of nail polish?
