Bleah. The Greek salad from the cafe in the school of nutrition is definitely not worth the $5.25 I paid for it. The hummus and pita bread are good; the rest of it... ugh.

QOTD from the little daily calendar [livejournal.com profile] donnad gave me: "If men can run the world, why can't they stop wearing neckties? How intelligent is it to start the day by tying a little noose around your neck?" -- Linda Ellerbee

Of course, I know that neckties had some function, once upon a time. If nothing else, they could serve as a bandage if someone got hurt. And male pediatricians often wear funny neckties as a way of being less threatening to their small patients. But...

ties that bind

Oh, come on, you should know this. Is this really more Sociology than Psychology?

They still have a function. Dominance and posturing. In one sense, it's an enforcing of corporate heirarchy in saying "To remind you that you work for me and I can make you do things, you will wear this tie". In another sense, it's a dominance display, when you consider the way the alpha types sniff around each other by looking at their ties; is it silk? a designer logo? old school colors?

Moreover, there's this, from http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/2965140.stm

"Doctors' ties 'spreading disease'
Doctors are urged to consider wearing shorter ties or bow ties
Doctors are being urged to stop wearing neckties in hospital."

and http://www.newscientist.com/news/news.jsp?id=ns99995029

"Doctors' ties harbour disease-causing germs"

I know that neckties had some function

I gather that by constricting the neck, the necktie caused the facial skin to flush, thus hiding the unhealthy pallor that came from late nights of gaming and drinking.

If men can run the world

Of course it's a myth that "men" run the world. Some men have a lot of power; most of them don't. Men are most definitely not in it together. That's all rather obvious, but it's also a common fallacy.
