WHERE WERE YOU WHEN:
1. When John F. Kennedy was shot (11/22/1963)
In utero
2. When Mt. St. Helens blew (5/18/1980)
High school in San Diego
3. When the space shuttle Challenger exploded (1/28/1986)
College, living in a group house, actually watched the TV coverage
4. When the 7.1 earthquake hit San Francisco (10/7/1989)
Columbia, MO ... don't remember much
5. When the Berlin Wall fell (11/7/1989)
Columbia, MO ... don't remember much
6. When the Gulf War began (1/16/1991)
Columbia, MO. watched the coverage on Tom B's television, was very sad
7. When the first World Trade Center bombing happened (2/26/1993)
Probably in California. I really don't remember.
8. When OJ Simpson was chased in his White Bronco (6/17/1994)
In Southern California, so it was definitely local news. I think I may actually have been out shopping for a dress in Santa Ana or Orange.
9. When the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City was bombed (4/18/1995)
On an airplane on the way to a conference. I watched the coverage on TV during a multi-hour layover in Atlanta.
10. When Princess Di was killed (8/31/1997)
I was either in California, having just defended my Ph.D. thesis, or in Waltham, MA, or somewhere in between.
11. When Bush was first announced President (11/7/2000)
I was definitely watching it on TV. Probably at my house. I remember feeling "uh-oh!" and hoping that I'd wake up in the morning to discover than Gore had, in fact, won Florida.
12. When the 6.8 earthquake hit Nisqually, WA (2/28/2001)
??? In MA
13. When terrorists destroyed the World Trade Center (9/11/2001)
I was driving to the train station on my way to the first day of grad school orientation at HSPH. I almost turned around and went home, once I figured out that it was not an update of Orson Wells' "War of the Worlds" radio broadcast.
