next weekend... I won't be travelling to Worldcon if I am allowed no books and no knitting, and get hassled about my insulin pump/meds etc. It is just not worth it.

Now to break it to Dad...

The no carry on, no laptops, no reading material ban applies only from and through the UK (and maybe to the UK) at this point. Hopefully the insanity won't spread that far.

I don't see anything about books or other stuff (other than a passenger saying that to be safe, she put her book in her suitcase).

The current statement on the TSA site just says liquids and gels are banned from carry-on baggage.

http://www.tsa.gov/press/happenings/threat-change.shtm

NO LIQUIDS OR GELS OF ANY KIND WILL BE PERMITTED IN CARRY-ON BAGGAGE. ITEMS MUST BE IN CHECKED BAGGAGE. This includes all beverages, shampoo, suntan lotion, creams, tooth paste, hair gel, and other items of similar consistency.

Exception: Baby formula, breast milk, or juice if a baby or small child is traveling; prescription medicine with a name that matches the passenger’s ticket; and insulin and essential other non-prescription medicines

Or getting stuck on the runway/in a holding pattern and having the plane run out of water. Again (for me).

I was wondering about that myself. I guess if it's still allowed to bring empty bottles through security and fill them up at a water fountain inside, I'll be OK. (I dehydrate quickly when flying, so I always bring potables.)

Check out what is says at www.tsa.gov. In addition, it might be good to print out the relavent pages from there they day of your flights.

AFAICT, the US is only banning liquids and gels. There have been some snarky jokes about taking ice blocks on board, but I would assume they are banned too.

What I can't figure out is what is going on with flights from the US to the UK which is likely to affect me circa 28 August. (OK, so the story will probably change - N times - by then.)

While you can bring empty bottles thru security and even buy water and other liquids (Starbucks) on the "sterile" side of security, you are not allowed to bring any liquids on the plane. I don't know if they are enforcing this with a secondary check, secondary spot-check, or just by threatening to throw you out of the plane at 39k feet.

I really hope this will get better in the next week. I'm not looking forward to traveling back from the UK next Friday 18 August. Compared to that I suspect the trip from BOS - LACon will be a walk to in the park.

I'll be very disappointed to not see you. I hope the restrictions ease up enough that you'll decide to attend.

Personally, I'm driving. Probably 2 days each way. I should post to tf to see if there's anything I should haul along.

I would probably drive if it wasn't 4 to 5 days minimum each way (I don't do "Extreme Daily Mileage driving.")

I am waiting to see what happens, and have a letter coming from my doctor about the insulin, the pump, and the diabetes supplies. It will be interesting to see how TSA handles the pump; it's an electronic device with liquid inside, about the size of a large pager, attached to me with tubing and a soft catheter.

there is an actual check point at the gate, where they are mostly checking for coffee/soda/water. Staffed at an apparently significant expense too.

If you do wind up going, and if it's not too inconvenient to email/post from the con, please do tell me how it went, and especially how security coped with the pump. (We're flying to London via Dublin on the 27th.)

Of course. I talked with someone on my doctor's staff yesterday, and she said that as long as one has a letter from on my doctor's letterhead listing all the things one must carry, I should be OK. But I'll let you know regardless.

Bring your insulin in labeled bottles with the Rx label from the pharmacy. Bring copies of the original Rxs if you want to be sure syringes & such are covered. Only bring enough insulin for the day, as you will probably not be able to refrigerate it. (Most insulin is good for a month unrefrigerated.)

I plan to type up an Rx label for my lip balm, as I can't be without it.

No syringes here because I have a pump, although the insulin reservoirs are pretty much just huge syringes. And I *always* carry an extra reservoir and pump set with me, along with a bottle of insulin.

Insulin actually is listed on the TSA website as an essential medicine that does not require a prescription. In most states, it doesn't, and people only get it with a prescription so their insurance will cover it.

I actually do not refrigerate my insulin at all, except for the unopened bottles, or if it's really hot.
