help needed with movie title?

OK, this is a shot in the dark, but... sometime around 1990 there was a movie released featuring a young, attractive man with dark hair. It was some sort of dramatic period piece. I vaugely remember that the title started with an S. There was a promotional poster released that featured the young actor sprawled back on a couch or bed. He was wearing a white shirt that may have been half-unbuttoned, and dark trousers. It was, excuse the expression, unbelievably hot -- like hotter than Natassia Kinski and the snake. (sidenote: I saw the poster at my friend SteveR's house in San Francisco -- this is the same SteveR from MIT that some of you might know, and I went to high school with him -- and I commented to him, "Seems we have the same taste in men...")

I want to find the name of the movie and hopefully the poster, but I just don't have enough details. Can anyone help?

I ran it by Patsfan, because he tends to be good at that kind of trivia. He said if you didn't say 1990, he'd say maybe Shakespeare in Love, but he thinks that was more mid-90s.
