OMG Jumping!
Sep. 3rd, 2007 05:35 pmSo I rode Trumpie today, first indoors on a lunge line (no hands! and for part of it no stirrups! though my balance is not that good), and then we went outdoors.
goddessfarmer lowered the jumps for me, since Alice is schooling at 3 feet plus, and gave me a jumping lesson. We started with a little baby cross rail, and then she raised it, and we did a "bounce" cross rail (horse jumps, lands, and immediately takes off again), and then she added a third jump, a straight rail maybe 2'3". That was all in a straight line and close together, so then we moved on to straight lines of two jumps farther apart, and then, to finish, two jumps with a long but tricky turn in between them. I think the biggest jump was 2'6". And
goddessfarmer said I did great; obviously she would not have been putting harder and harder things in front of me if I hadn't been. I have a lot to work on, of course, but the "basics" are all still there. She thinks I am quite ready for Tina's jumping lessons at Windrush, which start in a week.
Of course, it helps to be riding Trumpie, who is incredibly sane about jumping. There was one time he slowed down a bit before a jump he doesn't like, which can be a prelude to a refusal, but he responded to my little prod with my heels. He was marvelous! I am riding him again on Friday, but it will be mostly flatwork.
Today Minnie went back down to
goddessfarmer's house for the winter. She is by herself, except for the pigs who can still squeeze under the fence and get into her space, and NOT happy about it. She stomped around while in the trailer, and was hollering like mad when I left; if I'd had time, I would have spent the afternoon just talking to her.
goddessfarmer says it will take a few days for her to settle down. Of course, she'll get Trumpie as a companion sometime later this fall, after Alice's competition is over, and that will make her feel better. Once her hocks are treated and healed, and Trumpie is back, we'll do trail rides until (hopefully, as long as Minnie stays alive and sound) they get moved back up next year.
