brief update
Aug. 21st, 2006 12:45 pmWe've been in San Diego since Saturday night, staying as usual with our friends David and Stella.
Yesterday, we went down to Chula Vista (a little south of San Diego) to see my Dad and Helen. I really like their new house in the new retirement place. It's huge (nearly 1500 square feet), freshly remodeled, full of light, and has a kitchen that many of us would die for. The dog, well, the dog is obnoxious and spent most of her time shut in a separate room so she wouldn't bite us. She loves Helen, though, and Dad takes her over to the dog park almost every day, which gets him a little walk, which he needs.
The place is slightly less nice than the place they used to live in, but it's still pretty. No ocean views (unless one has an apartment in the upper floors of the main building), but the people seem nice, the dining room was good, it's quiet and pretty. Parts of Chula Vista are not safe, but they are far enough away from all that for me not to worry much.
The only worry I have is that they don't seem to be making friends. Yes, it's only been 2 1/2 months, but these places tend to be pretty sociable, and there were only one or two people who even said hi to them. Helen complains that the other residents are too conservative and not very well-educated and not interested in the same things she is (e.g. they like country&western music rather than classical). Dad seems happy enough, but he's always been fairly good at just getting along with folks. Of course, if they'd JUST STAYED at the original place, they'd have more of the kind of people they like. But they've moved four times in 5 years, and I think they should stay put for a while.
Other than that, San Diego is lovely as usual; we'll be heading north to LACon on Wednesday morning.
