I found out yesterday that one of my academic mentors died on July 18. She was only 51 and basically was poisoned by chemotherapy. She was someone I fought with over my own maturity or lack thereof, and who fought _for_ me when she found that others were ready to write me off over it. Though I haven't lived up to her belief that I would have a great academic career, I think she'd understand.

So, I am left with memories of Lizette Peterson-Homer, who was my first academic "mother."

She sounds like she was a fascinating person. You were fortunate indeed to have someone like that on your side (and I'm sure you deserved it). *hugs*
