argh

"Fires are spreading" according to the AP, and the elided server appears to have crashed. And there are 300,000 horses in San Diego County...

It can really seem that way.

I found a couple of photos from Sunday that just broke my heart... A horse in a paddock surrounded by fire, and a horse tied to a guard rail on state route 78... I don't know about the former horse, but the latter was apparently evacuated. I suspect that his owners had no trailer and moved him out to the road in hopes that someone passing by would have space for him.

Oh, there seem to be plenty of spaces for horses now... except I just read that some of the centers in Orange County are now being threatened by fire... The biggest problem has been with trailers: not enough trailer slots for all the horses, horses not trained to load in a trailer, trailers taking out one load of horses not allowed to go back for a second load...
